Hokitika is the Center of the Jade region. In ancient days the Maori, living mostly on the North Island came down to this region to collect Jade. They made tools from the Jade stone.
The train crosses the road without a barrier. Slow, obviously. There is no hurry.

Near Fox Glacier Lake Matheson shows a mirrored picture of Mt. Cook.
From Greymouth to Fox Glacier it is approx. 200km. The route passes by Hokitika, Ross, Hari Hari, Whataroa & Franz-Josef. In total this are seven settlings on 200km.
Five of the seven settlings look like very small villages. On the city limit of Fox Glacier the drivers are warned that there is no fuel station on the next 120km. In fact there is no settling too. Haast is the next place. But that’s part of tomorrow’s route.
