-11- At Mitre Peak

The weather forecast was mistaken. Instead of a half day in the afternoon the morning cleared up. The chance to take the photos of Mitre Peak and the Sound have been very welcome. Especially before the Tourist hordes fall over the region.
Every paradise has its contrasting evil. At Milford Sound the sandflies take over that role.
I was told that sandflies are attracted by dark stuff. What do tourists wear? Camouflage and dark stuff. Perfectly dressed I made my way into the center of the evil - Sandfly Beach
Happy - the best location for Mitre Peak shots.

In between I had to take a rest from the sandflies and shot the photo of the Bowen waterfall at Milford Sound. I couldn’t access the base of it unfortunately. The track was closed due to the season. So I had to shot it from the distance.
Impressive amounts of water falling here down.

More light and back into the torture place.

After I have been eaten up almost, I could escape alive. I have all respect for these guys waiting at that spot for the right light and the right time to push the trigger.

On my way out I stopped over at the Chasm 2km away from the Sound. The Chasm is a place where a river squeezes through and has left interesting formations.

I was interested to catch the waterfalls of yesterday in better light. As I suspected the waterfalls are present only when it is pouring down. No hundreds today, but at least some different views. Tough to shot good photos there as the waterfalls seem to fall out of sky. The scenery is almost surreal. I feel myself transplanted into a cover picture of The YES of their early days. Fragile, Close to the Edge, Yessongs. For the younger folks Avatar the flying rocks and their waterfalls make a good comparison.

On my way to Invercargill I found a nice hill formation, which will be transformed into a panorama. Looking forward to process this set of pictures. Nothing to look at right now.

Invercargill. A place which requires a couple of more looks before it may get attractive. Maybe in a good light the old and worn-out buildings make a nice picture. Besides that it looks really hmmmm. If you are not in the area, it is not worth the extra mile.
For me it was a stop for the night on my way to Curio Bay. A place where a petrified forest should be visible (at low tide). And Invercargill it is an entry to the Catlins, the area around the Catlin River.
