From Lake Tepako I hit the road towards Burke Pass. On the way I will come thru Fairlie.
Fairlie is a small settlement in the MacKenzie Country. Approx. 750 inhabitants. That is a bigger size settlement than e.g Omarama (approx. 350), Lake Tekapo (approx. 315). The bigger settlements are at the coast. Greymouth (approx. 11400), Hokitika (approx. 4000), Timaru (approx. 26800).
Timaru that where I am heading for tonight. Some 140km only, but I experienced that I really need the time.

Ongoing: Christchurch doesn’t get a rest. 13 Aftershocks over night (2 to 4s). The Christchurch Cathedral is collapsing more and more. Academics give it a high chance that Christchurch will be hit by another 6+ in the next time.
Reason is that the recent 6.3 (the 6.0 has been adjusted to 6.3) originates from another fault than the February quake.
Something named „liquifaction“ is a big and dangerous subject.
Some areas have been built on „sand“. Sure, solid sand, sand between rocks, but sand. When a quake arrives the sand behaves like a fluid. It flows out of all holes in ground. The ground turns to be not stable anymore. The sand comes to the surface in significant amounts, lays over streets and after a day gets hard as concrete. The persons confronted with this fact have to react immediately and shovel it away.
